Clerk Susan S Hazel

Susan Hazel has served the people of Huron County as Clerk of Courts since 2003.  She graduated with honors from The Ohio State University and has annually earned continuing education certification from the Ohio Clerk of Courts Association.  As an elected official, Clerk Hazel works to strengthen relationships between county offices in an effort to be a good steward of taxpayer funds.  The ongoing implementation of cost-effective technology aids in the offices’ efficiency.  Annually, the Huron County Clerk’s offices collect and disburse county fees and state tax monies totaling over 13 million dollars.

The Clerk of Courts has two main divisions – the legal office and the title office.  The fine staff at the courthouse and the title office focus on prompt, accurate customer service.  The clerk’s office is the “keeper of the records” – records for the Huron County Common Pleas Court; case records from our county to the Sixth District Court of Appeals; and motor vehicle, and watercraft title records.  The Clerk and staff have sworn an oath to follow the Ohio Constitution.  Guidelines for the office’s duties which are found in the Ohio Revised Code and the Ohio Supreme Court’s Rules of Superintendence.

The duties of the Clerk’s Legal Office are to process and preserve the pleadings for all civil, felony criminal, and domestic relations cases of the Huron County Common Pleas Court. Appeals cases to the 6th District Court from the county are filed through this office. Located on the second floor of the courthouse, with hours 8 – 4:30 Monday through Friday, the Clerk’s legal office also serves as a passport acceptance agent, records oaths of office, accepts bonds and assists with petit and grand jury records.

The Title Office issues certificates of title for cars, trucks, motorcycles, trailers, mobile homes, boats and motors. The county title office is located at Shady Lane in Norwalk, and is open Monday through Friday 8:00 – 4:30 and 8:00 to noon on Saturday. The office is part of the statewide computer-linked Automated Title Processing System (ATPS).
